Monsoons scare humans, and that happens even when we have a little knowledge of what is going on.  But the loud crashes, lightening and heavy rains can severely startle pets during the storms.
If pets are outside, they can become frantic and try to find a place to run to in hopes of escaping the noise.  Yavapai Humane Society sees 40% of its annual pet intake during the summer months.  It is important to double check that your pets have their tags in place and microchip when possible.
Surprisingly, cuddling your pet during a storm may be communicating that it is okay to be afraid, sending the wrong message to the pet.  Instead, just sit with your pet.  Sitting calmly with them helps them work through the situation as much as possible on their own.
