Groundhog Day is celebrated each February 2nd as an indicator of how long until spring arrives.  If a groundhog comes out of its hole on this day and sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather; no shadow means an early spring!
The first Ground Hog day was celebrated in 1887 at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. In 1887, the newspaper editor declared that Phil, the Punxsutawney groundhog, was America’s only true weather-forecasting groundhog.  Today, tens of thousands of people converge on Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney each February 2 to witness Phil’s prediction.
In 1993, the movie Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray popularized the usage of “groundhog day” to mean something that is repeated over and over.

There are many variations of groundhog day across the country.  Arizona has a non-event with Agua Fria Freddie, a shadow-seeking rattlesnake that comes out every year on February 2nd.  Since Spring in the Phoenix area is usually 300 days a year, and no one wants to get close enough to a rattlesnake to see its shadow, this event is not attended by many.
